John Branca grew up idolizing the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley. By the 1980s, he was the top confidante for another member of music royalty: pop king Michael Jackson.

The presence behind some of the singer’s most notable career moments, including the explosion of the “Thriller” music video on MTV, Branca is a key figure in the new biopic Michael about Jackson’s life and career. Michael’s nephew Jaafar Jackson plays the titular singer, while Miles Teller portrays Branca at the height of their partnership.

Branca not only helped propel Jackson to global superstardom, but has managed his musical legacy as a co-executor of the singer’s estate. Here’s what we know about his partnership with Jackson, his life today, and involvement in the movie.

Who Is John Branca?

From birth, Branca, born December 11, 1950, in Bronxville, New York, had an intimate connection to the entertainment industry. His mother, Barbara Werle, was a dancer and actor who appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and in a series of movies—including Charro!, a 1959 Western starring music icon Elvis. Branca’s father, John R. Branca, was an attorney and politician who served two terms in the New York State Assembly. He and Barbara separated when the younger John was only 4 years old.

Branca’s uncle, Ralph Branca, was a star MLB pitcher who played with Jackie Robinson for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Branca spent his early years in Mount Vernon, New York, before moving to Los Angeles at age 11 to be with his mother, according to Today. He had behavioral issues as a teenager and, after some run-ins with the law, was sent to boarding school—until he was expelled. “I still have the letter they sent my mother, it’s very funny,” Branca told Occidental College. “They said I had all the classic symptoms of a drug user—that I didn’t give a s—t about my studies, I didn’t come close to living up to my potential, I was rude to teachers, you name it. In retrospect, it’s an illuminating letter.”

He first majored in music at Los Angeles City College, but eventually graduated from Occidental and the UCLA School of Law. He then decided to combine his two passions.

Embarking on a career in entertainment law, Branca began working with some of the biggest names in music. He set up tours for Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Neil Diamond, and even represented the Presley estate for a time.

“I’ve been very fortunate,” Branca said. “Growing up, I had five idols and I wound up representing all of them. Elvis was No. 1. Then the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, and Michael and the Jackson 5.”

How Did John Branca Meet Michael Jackson?

Branca met Jackson through an intermediary in 1980. Jackson, then only around 21 years old, was surging from the success of his 1979 Off the Wall album—which included hits such as “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” and “Rock with You.”

“He said, ‘Do I know you?’” Branca recalled to Today. “It was one of those things you have in life where you feel so comfortable with a person you actually feel you do know them. The conversation is easy and the connection is effortless.”

Michael’s parents weren’t as easily convinced. His father, Joe Jackson, had handled the business matters of all six Jackson brothers until Michael decided to build his own advisory team, according to the Los Angeles Times. Branca met with Joe and Katherine Jackson personally to assure them that, despite his own young age, he was capable of representing the rising pop star.

In fact, Branca helped steer one of the biggest stretches of Jackson’s music career.

What Did John Branca Do as Michael Jackson’s Lawyer?

As Jackson’s lawyer and business adviser, Branca facilitated the release of the iconic “Thriller” music video in 1983.

Jackson was concerned about the video’s subject matter—a horror-themed sequence in which the singer transforms into a werecat and also dances with zombies—because of his beliefs as a practicing Jehovah’s Witness, as Biography.com previously reported. Branca made up a story about the religious convictions of Bela Lugosi, the famous actor who portrayed Dracula, to assuage Jackson, according to HITS magazine.

Branca also helped fund the video, which cost more than $1 million at the time, by negotiating a “Behind the Scenes” special to MTV and Showtime.

In 1985, Branca helped Jackson purchase the song catalog of the ATV Music publishing company, which controlled the copyrights to nearly all songs written by the Beatles. The collection also included compositions by Little Richard, the Pointer Sisters, Pat Benatar, and the Pretenders. The deal was reportedly for $47.5 million, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Away from music, Branca brokered the purchase of Neverland Ranch, Jackson’s sprawling California property that included amusement park rides, a petting zoo, and movie theater. The pair often traveled together, and Jackson even served as the best man at Branca’s first wedding in 1987. “What I remember was that Michael’s escort that night, his date, was his chimpanzee Bubbles, who came dressed in a tuxedo,” Branca recalled in a 2023 Instagram post.

Where Is John Branca Today?

Branca split from Jackson in 1990, but reunited three years later as the singer faced allegations of sexual battery. The case was settled out of court in 1994, but more accusations against Jackson followed. The singer was found not guilty of 10 charges, including lewd conduct with a minor and conspiracy to commit child abduction, during a highly publicized 2005 trial.

Branca resigned as Jackson’s adviser in 2006, according to HITS. However, the singer rehired him just days before his death on June 25, 2009. Jackson named Branca a co-executor of his estate in a 2002 will, along with John McClain.

At the time of his death, Jackson was over $500 million in debt, according to court documents. With Branca’s guidance—and the success of projects such as the 2009 concert film Michael Jackson’s This Is It—the estate was valued at more than $2 billion as of June 2024.

Branca is a partner and the head of the music department at the Los Angeles entertainment law firm Ziffren Brittenham. According to a June 2024 Billboard article, he has been married three times and has a car collection including a pair of Rolls-Royces. He also serves as a board member of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, just as his uncle Ralph did previously.

Did John Branca Participate in the Michael Movie?

Both executors of the Jackson estate, Branca and McClain, are credited as producers for Michael.

The movie’s production has reportedly been anything but smooth. Variety wrote in April 2026 that much of the film’s third act and its ending had to be rewritten and reshot, removing any references to the child molestation allegations against Jackson. Sources said this was because of a settlement clause that prohibited any mention or depiction of one of Jackson’s accusers.

Additionally, Michael’s daughter Paris Jackson, 28, took legal action against her father’s estate in November 2025, filing an objection in Los Angeles court alleging Branca and McClain failed to properly invest money in a way benefitting her and Michael’s other children, Prince and Bigi. She claimed Branca and McClain have received more than $148 million in compensation since taking over the estate.

“[The estate has] morphed into a private entertainment investment fund managed more for the benefit of Executors and their counsel than its beneficiaries,” the filing read, according to People. The complaint was dismissed from court without merit.

Paris also criticized the casting of Teller as Branca for the movie, calling it “peculiar and presumably costly” for the estate and suggesting it placed the executor at the center of the story rather than Jackson himself.

Watch Michael in Theaters Starting April 24

While Branca played a crucial role in Jackson’s meteoric rise, director Antoine Fuqua has tried to reassure viewers the movie is deeply focused on the singer and his background.

“Michael’s so eccentric and so different,” Fuqua told The Rich Eisen Show. “I mean, he shaped my career as well because I watched Michael not let himself get put in a box as an artist.”

Michael premieres in theaters Friday, April 24, and stars Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop, Colman Domingo as Michael’s father Joe Jackson, and Miles Teller as John Branca.
