Emily in Paris is officially back for a fourth season, and I couldn't be happier that my favorite dose of romantic comedy escapism is available for streaming on Netflix. The series follows Emily Cooper (played by Lily Collins), a marketing professional who relocates to Paris to help bring an American perspective to her new French team. Throughout the series, Cooper faces many ups and downs in her professional and personal life, like making great friends, dealing with pushback in the workplace, and facing major indecision in her love life. (Girl, just stay in your lane with Alfie!)
The series was created by Darren Star of Sex and the City, Beverly Hills 90210, and Melrose Place fame, so I'd expect nothing less than captivating scripts, conversation-starting fashions, and, of course, major beauty moments. After spotting a Foreo Luna device in Emily Cooper's bathroom, I was curious what other beauty products were used on Lily Collins on-set and consulted Aurélie Payen, the department head for makeup of Emily in Paris.
“Emily's look is evolving this season and is a blend of our two cultures: American and French. She keeps her American background with a little French touch, which makes her character unique,” Payen explains. Keep reading to learn how to recreate this hybrid American and French beauty sensibilities at home. And if you're already caught up on part one of season four, be sure to enjoy the just-dropped trailer of part two below:
Emily in Paris Skincare Prep
Payen always focuses on skincare prep to achieve an approachable yet daring makeup vibe, which includes investing in Best Tested skincare tools from Foreo. “Emily is at the cutting edge of technology when it comes to skincare,” Payen says. This should come as no surprise to viewers who have seen her create innovative marketing campaigns for luxury beauty and lifestyle brands, including Augustinus Bader, fictional designer Pierre Cadault's Rimowa collaboration, and Hästens, the Swedish maker of Drake's nearly $40,000 mattress of choice.
The Parisian celebrity makeup artist emphasizes the importance of skin prep and always double cleanses Collins' face with the Luna. Payen follows up with the UFO mask for “a truly complete treatment in just three minutes.” Next, she plumps up Collins' eye contour and lips with the gentle Iris massager before treating her to the new LED FAQ 202 Mask. Payen also uses the Bear to “help restore density to the skin.” The FDA-cleared microcurrent device lifts and tones the face in just two minutes. Plus, it has a proprietary Anti-Shock System for pain-free beauty prep.
After prepping Collins' skin with high-tech beauty tools, Payen used products from French beauty brands like Beau Domaine and Yon-KA that suit her skin type. Notably, Brad Pitt founded Beau Domaine skincare line, chockfull of antioxidant-rich French grapes. A-listers such as Sterling K. Brown and Lupita Nyong'o also favor the vegan brand, who have sported the line's products at major red-carpet events, like the Oscars and Tony Awards. Since sunscreen is essential for skin protection 365 days a year, Payen also applied 111 Skin Sunscreen Cream before makeup.
Emily in Paris Makeup
Moving onto cosmetics, Payen reaches for products by Lisa Eldridge and lipsticks by Makeup By Mario. She also relies on Victoria Beckham Beauty, Clé de Peau foundation, and Dior products. How positively French!
Cooper favors a bold lip throughout the series, so I just had to ask Payen how to recreate the exact look at home. And it's all about giving your pout some extra TLC before adding steps to your makeup routine.
“To get Emily's signature lips, I advise you to prepare your lips beforehand with a scrub and a treatment, such as Talika's smile patch for lips, then use a lip pencil to highlight the shape and, using a fine brush, fill in the lips with a matte lipstick,” Payen says. She also advises blotting with a tissue or dusting on a little transparent loose powder to set the lipstick. Then reapply lipstick a second time for maximum hold. Those who prefer a glossy effect can swipe on lip gloss over their pout.
