Jordan Belfort has described Wall Street as a “very dangerous place,” and a new docuseries examines how the former stockbroker-turned-convicted fraudster took advantage and defrauded investors of hundreds of millions.
The three-part project The Real Wolf of Wall Street debuts Tuesday, July 14, on Paramount+ and teases the “explosive true story of Belfort’s meteoric rise” at his Stratton Oakmont financial firm—and, of course, the illicit activities behind it. Belfort made millions through his ruthless tactics, but ultimately went to prison for securities fraud and money laundering. He’s still rebuilding his reputation today, and still owes his victims millions.
More than a decade after the Martin Scorsese-directed movie bearing his nickname became a massive hit, here’s a look at what we know about Belfort, 64, today and his current financial status.
What Were Jordan Belfort’s Financial Crimes?
Belfort—born July 9, 1962, in Queens, New York—gained notoriety after swindling millions of dollars from investors through his firm, Stratton Oakmont, during the 1990s, as Biography.com previously reported.
Belfort (played in The Wolf of Wall Street movie by Leonardo DiCaprio) and his real-life business partner Danny Porush (fictionalized as Donnie Azoff in the film and played by Jonah Hill) carried out a “pump-and-dump” scheme in which brokers pushed stocks onto their unsuspecting clients, helping inflate the stocks’ prices. Then, the company would sell off its own holdings in these stocks at a great profit.
Belfort used the profits to build a lavish lifestyle, including purchasing a mansion and many sports cars. But he also developed a drug habit that led to problems in his personal life—including an eventual divorce from his second wife, Nadine Macaluso.
By 1994, Belfort was out of the brokerage business, and he received a lifetime ban from working in the securities industry as part of a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Stratton Oakmont was liquidated to pay off multiple fines and settlements.
Belfort pleaded guilty to securities fraud and money laundering in 1999, and cooperated with authorities—including implicating his former partner Porush—to secure a less severe prison sentence. He was sentenced to four years in prison in 2003 and personally fined $110 million. He served only 22 months in jail and still hasn’t paid off his debts.
What Was Jordan Belfort’s Life in Prison Like?
Belfort spoke about his incarceration at the Taft Correctional Institution in California during a 2024 interview with TV host Piers Morgan.
“I was not in a terrible jail, it wasn’t like I had to worry about, you know, going into the shower ... it was a minimum security [facility],” Belfort told Morgan. “But jail’s jail, you know. You have no freedom, you can’t do what you want to do, and there’s something about that that can be very suffocating.”
Belfort added that he spent a lot of time working out and developing his writing ability. The latter allowed him to write his 2007 memoir, The Wolf of Wall Street, which served as the basis for the Scorsese movie.
While Belfort said he feels “very remorseful” and wished he could have avoided hurting other people with his crimes, he admitted he wouldn’t change any previous parts of his life.
“The lesson for anyone listening is that, you know, everyone f—ks up. Everyone makes mistakes,” Belfort said. “Some people make much bigger mistakes than others, right?”
What Did Jordan Belfort Say About The Wolf of Wall Street Movie?
While The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) took some clear creative liberties with Belfort’s life—most notably through its fictionalization of ex-wife Macaluso as Naomi Lapaglia, played by Margot Robbie—Belfort told Morgan he is “grateful” for the film and its success. The movie grossed more than $392 million worldwide at the box office and became the most pirated movie of 2014.
“It was a special movie, you know. Leo, Margot, incredible job, and it just became like the greatest, the biggest cult hit. One of the biggest in history, and I am grateful for that,” Belfort said. “Again, it was great to have that platform, and I used that to really build my business of speaking and mentoring around the world.”
Belfort also hinted the wild behavior at Stratton Oakmont shown in the movie was much tamer than what occurred in real life. This is one aspect of the former stockbroker’s career the new docuseries promises to examine in greater detail.
Where Is Jordan Belfort Now?
According to his official LinkedIn page, Belfort has been sober for at least 13 years. He works as a motivational speaker “who assists both people and organizations in breaking through whatever barriers hold them back from achieving success.”
In addition to his original memoir, Belfort has published multiple financial self-help books, including Way of the Wolf (2018) and The Wolf of Investing: My Insider’s Playbook for Making a Fortune on Wall Street (2024).
In October 2021, Page Six reported Belfort had privately married Argentinian model Cristina (also spelled Christina on her Instagram profile) Invernizzi in Las Vegas. She has shared multiple photos with Belfort on her official Instagram account, which identifies her as a licensed auctioneer, a real estate broker, and a human resources administrator.
Belfort became a first-time grandfather in 2023 when daughter Chandler, his oldest child with ex-wife Macaluso, gave birth to her first child, according to People.
As of 2026, Belfort has reportedly only paid roughly $14 million of the $110 million in fines levied against him—with Celebrity Net Worth estimating his total value at negative $100 million. He has been coy about how much he earns now, only telling Morgan in 2024 he does “very, very well.”

Paramount+ revealed the new docuseries includes “never-before-seen footage, thousands of internal FBI documents, archival interviews,” as well as commentary from Belfort’s former wife Macaluso, per a news release.
