Darron Lee reached the pinnacle of football, becoming a first-round NFL draft pick and playing for a Super Bowl champion. But once his career ended, he was allegedly linked to a series of unsettling domestic disputes—now culminating in an allegation that he killed his girlfriend.

On June 9, a grand jury in Hamilton County, Tennessee, indicted Lee, 31, on a first-degree murder charge. A conviction carries a life sentence, and it’s still possible Lee could face capital punishment under Tennessee law.

Here’s everything we know about Lee, his football career, and details of his case.

According to ESPN, Lee was born on October 18, 1994, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but moved to New Albany, Ohio, during his childhood.

Lee’s recruiting profile on 247sports describes him as a “jack-of-all-trades” high school football star. As a senior, he was a two-way standout with more than 1,700 yards on offense and five interceptions as a defensive back. He committed to Ohio State University as an overall athlete and, after a redshirt season in 2013, converted to linebacker and was named a freshman All-American and defensive MVP of the Sugar Bowl game.

Lee was drafted with the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft by the New York Jets and started 36 games across the following three seasons. He played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019, but was inactive for their Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers. A year later, he played in two games for the Buffalo Bills before eventually dropping out of the league.

Unfortunately, his football accomplishments are now overshadowed by a series of incidents away from the field—culminating in a first-degree murder indictment.

Why Is Darron Lee Charged with Murder?

In June 2017, ABC News reported the NFL was investigating Lee for an incident that occurred at the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City. Lee allegedly got into an argument with an unspecified woman—revealed to be his girlfriend—and had to be restrained by then-teammate Leonard Williams. No arrests were made.

In a much more disturbing incident in February 2026, however, Lee was arrested after his current girlfriend—identified as Gabriella Perpetuo, 29—was found dead inside a home in Ooltewah, Tennessee. According to ABC News Channel 9, an examiner’s report found that Perpetuo died from multiple blunt force injuries, including trauma to her head and face, a stab wound to her chest, and a bite mark on her shoulder collected for DNA testing. Her death was ruled a homicide.

On February 6, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office announced Lee was arrested as a suspect and charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

In court evidence presented at a preliminary hearing, prosecutors alleged Lee communicated with ChatGPT a day before Perpetuo’s death, asking “what do I do?” in a hypothetical situation in which his fiancée had swollen eyes and stabbed herself and was unresponsive.

According to the Associated Press, Lee was already on probation in Franklin County, Ohio, and Alachua County, Florida, for three different alleged assaults involving another man, Lee’s mother, and the mother of his child.

What Do We Know About Darron Lee’s Case and Trial?

On June 12, 2026, a Hamilton County grand jury formally indicted Lee on a charge of first-degree murder. However, prosecutors dropped the tampering with evidence charge to focus solely on the more serious allegation.

A proposed trial date for Lee hasn’t been made public. He currently faces a life sentence if convicted of first-degree murder and, according to Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wampe, a decision will be made on whether Lee could instead face the death penalty.

Per the AP, Lee is currently held without bond at the Hamilton County Jail.
