A trial date for Caleb Flynn, the former American Idol contestant accused of killing his wife, Ashley Flynn, has been set for late April.

According to WTDN.com, a judge set the start of Caleb Flynn’s trial for Tuesday, April 28 at a preliminary hearing. Flynn, 39, was arrested on February 19 and is accused of killing his wife Ashley, 37, inside their home in Tipp City, Ohio.

On March 18, Flynn was indicted on 11 charges total, including one count of aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, three counts of tampering with evidence, and two misdemeanor counts of intimidation of an attorney, victim or witness in a criminal case, according to WLWT.com. Flynn pleaded not guilty to all counts at an arraignment the following day.

The case marks a second deadly tragedy connected to the TV singing competition in less than a year. In July 2025, an American Idol music supervisor and her husband were shot and killed inside their home.

Here’s what we know so far about Ashley’s death, Caleb’s arrest and charges, and what he previously said about her on the popular reality show.

Who Is Ashley Flynn, and How Was She Killed?

Caleb Flynn is accused of killing his wife Ashley Flynn in the early morning of Monday, February 16.

According to the Dayton Daily News, police arrived at the family’s home in response to an emergency call about a robbery in progress. Tipp City Police Chief Greg Adkins previously confirmed Ashley was pronounced dead at the scene with two gunshot wounds. There were also signs of forced entry into the home.

Officials have offered little details about the investigation, but court records show Caleb is suspected of tampering with the crime scene. He was questioned about the deadly encounter prior to his arrest. “The family and community deserve a thorough, professional and compassionate investigation into this very sensitive matter,” Adkins said in a statement. “As a result of the investigation, probable cause existed to charge Caleb Flynn with the murder of his wife.”

As part of his arraignment, Caleb Flynn’s updated bond was placed at $3.5 million by a judge. Flynn is also barred from any interactions with his two children under a no-contact order.

Ashley was an elementary school teacher and volleyball coach for the Tipp City Schools public district in Ohio. She graduated in 2010 from Lee University, a private Christian university in Cleveland, and had previously served as a staff member of the Christian Life Center church.

It’s not clear when Caleb and Ashley married, but a TV interview with American Idol suggests it was sometime prior to 2013. The couple also have two daughters, who were both home at the time of Ashley’s killing.

What Did Flynn Tell Police After Ashley’s Death?

On March 2, Tipp City Police released bodycamera footage taken at the Flynn home after the emergency call on February 16.

In the footage, which is redacted inside the house, Flynn is heard crying and struggling to breathe as he speaks to officers. “Is, is she, is she gone sir, is she?” he asks in video shown by WHIO TV 7 in Dayton. Flynn also places phone calls to his mother and Ashley’s mother, saying that “someone broke in and shot [Ashley].”

When asked if there are any guns inside the home, Flynn responded that he has a shotgun, a pellet gun, and a handgun kept inside his truck’s center console. The footage shows police investigating and noting that a side door to the garage was open, as well as the console where he claimed his handgun was stored.

Police took Flynn’s fingerprints on the same day, but said it was because they knew his fingerprints would be all over the house during the investigation.

When Did Flynn Appear on American Idol?

Little is known about Flynn’s childhood and background. He is also a graduate of Lee University.

Most notably, Flynn appeared as a contestant on the 12th season of the reality singing competition show American Idol in 2013. A short video clip about his time on the show is still active on the program’s YouTube page.

During the interview, Flynn reveals he had tried out for the show once prior but didn’t make it past first auditions. He cites former winner and current judge Carrie Underwood as his favorite prior contestant.

Flynn also mentions his previous job as a music pastor and complements his wife repeatedly throughout the two-minute soundbite.

“I absolutely love the Lord. I love my wife more than anything. She is very, very pretty. Just… oof, I love her,” he says. “But, you know, I’m just a normal person who absolutely loves to sing more than anything in the world, and I think I have a different sound to my voice.”

Flynn was cut shortly into the competition and didn’t make it to the live rounds.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Flynn worked as a vice president of sales for Richard D. Smith & Sons Inc., a family-run supplier for commercial flooring and worship seats.

When Does Caleb Flynn’s Trial Begin?

Flynn was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on February 26, but the session was postponed one month after defense attorneys requested a delay to wait for police reports and laboratory test results, according to the Dayton Daily News. A pretrial hearing was held March 30.

During this hearing, Judge Jeannine N. Pratt scheduled the start date of Flynn’s trial for Tuesday, April 28. According to WDTN.com, the defense filed a motion for dissemination, which would limit the public from accessing court records. A discussion on that motion will be held April 6.

The start date of the trial can still change if any time waivers or motions for continuance are filed in the meantime.
