Michigan couple Brian and Lynette Hooker sailed around together for more than a decade, documenting their life at sea on social media, including their YouTube channel The Sailing Hookers. But their adventures abruptly came to end when Lynette went missing in the Bahamas on April 4.
While Brian has claimed she fell off their dinghy due to rough waters and disappeared near the Abaco Islands, the U.S. Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Police Force have opened a criminal investigation in Lynette’s disappearance. Authorities took Brian into custody and are looking into his involvement, though he has not been charged and has denied any wrongdoing.
Here’s what we know about Brian Hooker’s arrest and the investigation into his wife’s disappearance.
Who Is Brian Hooker?
Brian Hooker was arrested on April 8—just four days after his wife Lynette Hooker, 55, vanished. According to Bahamian police, Brian was taken into custody, where he is being questioned as a suspect. The 59-year-old told authorities that his wife fell from their 8-foot dinghy as they were en route back to their yacht at night.
Lynette was reportedly pulled away by a strong current. Brian claimed he saw her swimming to shore, but ultimately lost sight of her. Since she had the dinghy’s engine safety lanyard on her, the boat lost power. Brian said he had to paddle to shore, and the dinghy eventually beached in Marsh Harbor.
Following the incident, Brian posted on Facebook that he was “heartbroken” over his wife’s disappearance. “I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Bahamas,” he wrote the morning before his arrest. “Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart. We continue to search for her and that is my sole focus.”
Why Was Brian Hooker Arrested?
Brian Hooker was arrested because of perceived inconsistencies in his story, with authorities and family members both questioning why Lynette had the ignition keys on her in the first place. Lynette’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, also wondered why her stepdad never left the dinghy. “Why wouldn’t he drop anchor and look for her? Why did he paddle the other way?” she asked in an interview with CNN.
Suspicions were also raised over a past domestic violence incident involving the couple. In 2015, Lynette was arrested for reportedly hitting Brian in the face “four to five times” during a drunken altercation. Lynette, however, alleged her husband hit her in the forehead and choked her. Police were not able to determine who started the fight.
Describing their relationship as volatile, Aylesworth revealed that her mother and stepfather had “a history of not getting along, especially when they drink.” She also said she didn’t believe her mom would “just fall off the boat.”
Is Lynette Hooker Alive?
Lynette hasn’t been declared legally dead. Authorities initially set out on a search and rescue mission for Lynette, scouring the area near Elbow Cay and Hopetown in the Abaco Islands to find her.
On April 8, however, U.S. Coast Guard and local police transitioned to a recovery mission, the goal of which is to retrieve victims who are presumed to be deceased.
Where Is Brian Hooker Now?
Brian Hooker remains in custody at a police station in Freeport, Grand Bahama. His attorney, Terrel Butler, requested medical attention for him, claiming he injured his knee during his arrest. According to Butler, authorities escorted Hooker to his boat in handcuffs to conduct a search in “choppy” waters and he lost his footing and fell overboard. Police immediately rescued him, but Hooker reportedly sustained a visible injury to his knee.
According to ABC News, Butler told reporters that police questioned Brian for three hours on Friday, April 10, and had until later that night to make a charging decision, or file an extension. She added that Brian has been fully cooperating with authorities.
“He was questioned in relation to causing harm, which resulted in her death,” Butler said. “We have not been informed of any evidence that any body has been recovered.”
