The Netflix documentary The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson reexamines the life and murder of the star cyclist. It is based on a 2022 feature story of the same name in Bicycling magazine.

Among the film’s most poignant moments are home videos featuring Moriah’s friends and family, including her mother Karen Wilson, father Eric Wilson, and brother Matt Wilson. All three also participated in interviews, providing new commentary on the days leading into and following Moriah’s killing.

Kaitlin Armstrong, an apparent romantic rival, fatally shot Wilson, 25, at her friend’s Austin, Texas, apartment on May 11, 2022.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Wilson family started a charity organization in Moriah’s honor and played a pivotal role in the production of the new film. They also continued to fight for additional justice for their daughter and sister.

Here’s what we know about their lives today.

Did Moriah Wilson’s Family Sue Her Killer, Kaitlin Armstrong?

The new documentary follows Wilson’s parents and brother as they attend Armstrong’s trial and react to her conviction and sentencing. Armstrong, now 38, was convicted of first-degree murder in Moriah’s death in November 2023 and sentenced to 90 years in prison.

However, Wilson’s family fought for additional recompense. Eric and Karen Wilson filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Armstrong and, in June 2024, a judge ruled in their favor. According to KXAN, Judge Daniella DeSata Lyttle demanded Armstrong pay $15 million total—including $5 million each to Eric and Karen for “mental anguish, including emotional pain, torment and suffering from the death of [their] daughter.”

Soon after, the Wilsons filed an additional suit accusing Armstrong, her mother, her sister, and Armstrong’s on-again, off-again boyfriend Colin Strickland of fraudulent transfer. They alleged the defendants transferred Armstrong’s assets “with the intent to hinder, delay or defraud.” The outcome of the complaint isn’t known.

In the meantime, Eric, Karen, and Matt Wilson have tried to channel their grief into more positive outcomes for the community.

Where Is Father Eric Wilson Now?

Similar to his daughter, Eric Wilson is an accomplished athlete in his own right. According to Moriah’s Dartmouth College athletics bio, both of her parents competed for the U.S. Ski Team—and the documentary mentions Eric nearly qualified for the Olympics. Eric’s sister, Laura Wilson Todd, did compete at the 1998 Winter Games in Nordic skiing.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Eric Wilson worked as a skiing coach and athletic director at Burke Mountain Academy—the boarding school that Moriah attended before her pivot to cycling—from 1988 through 2001.

Wilson then became a financial advisor. He began working for Edward Jones in 2009 and is still active with the company, according to his profile. His business is based in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

Where Is Mother Karen Wilson Now?

According to her Moriah Wilson Foundation biography, Karen Wilson has worked in education, hospitality, and as a mountain bike guide and instructor. “Raising Moriah and Matt here [in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont] has been her greatest joy,” the writeup adds.

Karen recently spoke to Bicycling, offering details of her involvement in the Netflix documentary. In addition to their interview participation, the Wilson family provided notes for filmmakers after watching a raw cut in 2025. They wanted the project to focus more on Moriah’s life and accomplishments and less on the gruesome details of her murder.

“I mean, we definitely had mixed emotions. If it were up to me, it would be 10 percent the crime and 90 percent Moriah—because I’m her mom. That’s all I want to watch,” she said.

Where Is Brother Matt Wilson Now?

According to his Moriah Wilson Foundation biography, Matt lives in East Burke, Vermont. He followed in his father’s footsteps and coaches under-16 ski racers at Burke Mountain Academy.

Matt continues to hone his own skills on the slopes. In 2025, he participated in a training and coaching program with Global Racing Ski Team in Austria and Italy.

Matt studied English literature in college and graduated from Middlebury College in 2022.

What Is the Moriah Wilson Foundation?

Matt, Eric, and Karen Wilson attend the SXSW premiere of The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson in March 2026.

Eric serves as the president of the Moriah Wilson Foundation, a nonprofit organization established in 2023 that carries on Moriah’s vision of “using her platform as a cyclist to give back to the community that shaped her.”

The foundation is a true family project: Matt is vice president, while Karen is part of the board of directors.

Eric told Bicycling the foundation has given out $140,000 to various organizations and hopes the new documentary will bring more attention to its programs. “We are making an impact and, god willing, we’ll be able to expand that,” he said. “We’re determined to make good from this tragedy.”

Each year, the Moriah Wilson Foundation holds a Ride for Mo race to raise money for its programs. The fourth annual event takes place May 9 at Kingdom Trails in Lyndon, Vermont, and now features a guided trail ride for cyclists ages 5 through 13.
