Caitlin Cash first met Moriah Wilson as a fellow cycling enthusiast, and their shared interest quickly developed into a friendship. Tragically, their bond was shattered forever with Wilson’s murder in May 2022.
The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson is now streaming on Netflix and recounts the rising cyclist’s life and final moments, including her shooting death at the hands of apparent romantic rival Kaitlin Armstrong. It is inspired by a 2022 feature story of the same name in Bicycling magazine.
One of the individuals interviewed in the documentary is Cash, who was letting Wilson stay in her apartment at the time and first discovered the grisly scene. Cash also played an important role in Wilson’s trial and continues to share her legacy.
Here’s what you need to know about their friendship.
Who Is Caitlin Cash?
According to her LinkedIn profile, Cash attended the University of Texas at Austin. She graduated in 2012 with degrees in French and international business.
Cash offered details of her professional background in a 2024 interview with CanvasRebel. After college, she worked abroad for six years in education—including teaching English in Thailand—and bicycling tourism.
She eventually returned to the U.S. and Austin, where she is now based. It was through her passion for cycling that she became a companion of Moriah Wilson.
How Did Caitlin Cash Meet Moriah Wilson?
As Bicycling previously reported, Cash was making social media videos for organizers at the Rooted Vermont race in August 2021 when she was introduced to Wilson’s family.
Over the next few months, Cash—who, along with friends, had bought The Village Inn resort in East Burke, Vermont, and was living nearby—frequently spoke with Wilson’s mother, Karen, and went biking with her brother, Matt. In October 2021, she introduced herself to Moriah at the Big Sugar Gravel races in Bentonville, Arkansas, and the pair struck up a friendship.
Wilson briefly stayed at Cash’s apartment in Austin, and Cash traveled to Vermont to spend Christmas with the Wilson family. By May 2022, Wilson was back in Austin with Cash and preparing for the Gravel Locos race in nearby Hico, Texas.
Instead, she became the victim of a deadly attack at Cash’s apartment.
Where Was Caitlin Cash the Night of Moriah Wilson’s Murder?
On May 11, 2022, Cash was out for dinner with friends when she returned to her apartment and discovered Wilson unresponsive and bleeding on the bathroom floor. Cash called 911 and began CPR, and a recording of her exchange with first responders is played in the Netflix documentary.
However, paramedics pronounced Wilson—the victim of an apparent shooting—dead shortly after their arrival.
Security camera footage showed a dark-colored SUV driving past the building, and police were able to identify the vehicle as belonging to Kaitlin Armstrong—the romantic partner of Colin Strickland, who had dropped Wilson off at the apartment around 8:30 p.m.
Armstrong was eventually named a suspect in Wilson’s killing, but fled the country and traveled to Costa Rica. She even received plastic surgery to alter her identity, but U.S. Marshals eventually captured and arrested her on June 29.
Cash testified at Armstrong’s criminal trial. The latter was convicted of Wilson’s murder in November 2023 and sentenced to 90 years in prison.
Cash spoke after Armstrong’s sentencing, reflecting on the murder and its aftermath. “I go home every night to my house after watching video after video of it all day here, and there’s Mo’s ashes, sitting on my bedside table waiting for me,” Cash said. “I’m struck by how much this has affected so many people.”
Where Is Caitlin Cash Now?
According to her LinkedIn profile, Cash worked as a project manager at Dell through June 2024. She is also the founder of Kinship Milk Tea, a line of milk tea beverages based in Austin.
“I’m most proud of the community that we have built,” she told CanvasRebel of Kinship. “It brings me so much joy meeting customers while we are out stocking shelves or doing sampling events in stores; they keep us going!”
