Who Is Patrick Mahomes?

Football player Patrick Mahomes has won three Super Bowls as quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, earning the game’s MVP award in each instance. The son of former MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes Sr., Patrick played baseball in college and almost went pro. But his success on the football field at Texas Tech University changed his plans. Mahomes was drafted into the NFL in 2017 as the 10th overall pick and has since won two league MVP awards. He is one of the highest paid players in professional football.

Parents, Siblings, and Early Life

Patrick Lavon Mahomes II was born September 17, 1995, in Tyler, Texas.

His parents are former MLB pitcher Patrick “Pat” Mahomes Sr., who played professionally for 11 years, and event planner Randi Martin Mahomes. The younger Mahomes, who is biracial, has said he’s both “proud to be Black” and “proud to have a white mom, too.” Pat and Randi are now divorced, though they remain “friendly.”

Mahomes has one brother, Jackson, and three half-siblings: sisters Mia and Zoe, along with brother Graham. Today, Jackson is a social media star with over 1.1 million followers on TikTok and is known for posting videos from many of Patrick’s games. However, he is also a controversial figure. Most notably, he was arrested in May 2023 and charged with three counts of aggravated sexual battery and a fourth charge of misdemeanor battery stemming from an incident at a restaurant in Overland Park, Kansas, in February 2023. The three felony charges were dropped in January 2024, and Jackson later pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor. He was sentenced to six months of probation.

Before either Mahomes brother found fame, they followed their father’s star. With Pat playing for several MLB teams throughout his career, the family often lived in apartments and hotel rooms in cities where he played. Patrick was athletically gifted like his father. He excelled at baseball and also played football.

By his junior year, Mahomes was starting at quarterback at Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas. In his senior year, he threw for 4,600 yards, 50 touchdowns, and only four interceptions, but college coaches still thought his future was in baseball.

College

After high school, the Detroit Tigers drafted Mahomes in the 37th round. Declining the offer, Mahomes enrolled at Texas Tech University in 2014 and continued to play baseball, assuming he’d enter the MLB draft again.

After success as a starter on the football team during his sophomore season, however, he shifted focus and quit playing baseball. Mahomes eventually decided to forego his senior year at Texas Tech to enter the NFL draft. Even so, he ended his college career ranking third in passing yards, touchdown passes, attempts, and completions. He also ranked as the school’s second all-time leader among QBs with 22 rushing touchdowns.

NFL Career: Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Mahomes as the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. Mahomes made his professional football debut and first start against the Denver Broncos that December.

In 2018, he became just the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for 50 touchdowns and 5,000 passing yards in a single season and was named the NFL’s MVP. Leading the team to a 12-4 record, Mahomes was the first Chiefs player to win a league MVP award.

In February 2020, Mahomes played in his first Super Bowl, ultimately winning the championship over the San Francisco 49ers with a final score of 31-20. He was named the Super Bowl LIV MVP and, later that year, finalized a 10-year contract extension—then the most lucrative in league history—to ensure he would remain in Kansas City long-term.

Mahomes and the Chiefs earned a spot in the NFL championship for a second year running in 2021. However, they lost Super Bowl LV to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 31-9.

After missing out on a third consecutive Super Bowl berth, Mahomes returned in February 2023. The Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 to secure the quarterback’s second Super Bowl victory and third for the franchise. Mahomes was awarded the Super Bowl MVP for the second time.

In the 2023 regular season, Mahomes threw for 4,183 yards and 27 touchdowns. Leading the Chiefs to playoff wins over the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens, the quarterback sent the team to its fourth Super Bowl in five years. Mahomes led Kansas City to a second-half comeback and threw the winning touchdown pass in overtime for a 25-22 victory over the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. He was again named the game’s MVP, becoming the third player to collect three or more Super Bowl MVP honors. Joe Montana and Tom Brady, with five total, are the others.

Mahomes and the Chiefs returned to the Super Bowl in 2024. They again faced San Francisco, who managed to tie the game just before the fourth quarter ended. It marked only the second Super Bowl to go to overtime. The 49ers tallied a field goal, putting pressure on Mahomes. The quarterback then led an impressive drive that ended with a 3-yard toss to wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who scored the game-winning touchdown.

“I can’t even explain what was going through my mind. It was just extreme joy,” Mahomes later said. “I’m so proud of the team, and so proud of the guys to battle to the very end.”

The victory marked the Chiefs’ second consecutive NFL title, and although they had a shot at a three-peat in 2025, the Eagles trounced them, 40-22.

Social Justice Activism

In June 2020, Mahomes was one of several pro athletes to appear in a viral Black Lives Matter video that called out police brutality. Also in the video were fellow NFL players Saquon Barkley, DeAndre Hopkins, Odell Beckham Jr., Ezekiel Elliott, and Deshaun Watson.

“I understand my platform,” he told GQ in an August 2020 profile. “I’m in the middle of negotiating my next contract, to hopefully be a Kansas City Chief for a long time, but I still thought this was important enough, and this was something that had to be said. It wasn’t something I could sit back on and worry about my next contract because I needed to use my platform to help. Sometimes it’s not about money. It’s not about fame. It’s about doing what’s right.”

Soon afterward, he joined NBA star LeBron James’ More than a Vote organization that focuses on voter registration and anti–voting suppression efforts. In a July 2020 tweet, Mahomes encouraged his more than 1.7 million Twitter followers to send him a screenshot of their registration confirmation.

That fall, his 15 and the Mahomies Foundation split the cost of new voting machines in Kansas City with the Chiefs ahead of the 2020 general election. As a result of his activism, Sports Illustrated named Mahomes a 2020 Sportsperson of the Year.

Brittany and Patrick Mahomes, seen here in 2023, were high school sweethearts who married in March 2022.

Mahomes married his high school sweetheart, Brittany Mahomes, in March 2022. The couple have three children. Their elder daughter, Sterling, was born in February 2021. Patrick III, their son who goes by “Bronze,” arrived in November 2022. The couple then welcomed another daughter, Golden, in January 2025.

Patrick and the former Brittany Matthews began dating in 2012 during his sophomore year of high school. The pair stayed together while attending separate colleges, with Patrick attending Texas Tech and Brittany playing soccer for the University of Texas.

On the same day he received his Super Bowl LIV Champion ring in September 2020, Patrick proposed to Brittany at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Weeks later, the couple announced that she was pregnant with their first child.

Star of Quarterback

Mahomes was one of three NFL quarterbacks—along with Marcus Mariota and Kirk Cousins—featured in the first season of the docuseries Quarterback, which premiered on Netflix in July 2023. With NFL great Peyton Manning as an executive producer, the series followed Mahomes throughout the 2022 NFL season and gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look at his practice habits and life away from the field with his wife, Brittany, and their family.

“Everybody sees the game days, but they don’t see the day-to-day grind,” Mahomes said. “They don’t see how you have to manage playing football and being a dad and being a husband.”

Net Worth

In May 2025, Forbes estimated Mahomes’s net worth is $86.8 million. Celebrity Net Worth has a higher number at $90 million.

Much of the athlete’s wealth is from his lucrative playing contract. In 2020, the quarterback agreed to a 10-year extension with the Chiefs worth $450 million. The deal was restructured in 2023 to guarantee him $210.6 million through the ensuing four seasons. For the 2025 NFL season, his contract is the 11th largest in the league.

The quarterback also earns money through his endorsement deals. Sportico reported he collected $27 million in 2024. Mahomes has been a brand ambassador for Adidas, Hugo Boss, Hublot watches, DraftKings, the grocery chain Hy-Vee, and State Farm insurance, among other companies.

Mahomes has used some of his money to purchase a stake in the Kansas City Royals MLB franchise. He is part of the ownership group for the Sporting KC and Kansas City Current professional soccer teams as well as the F1 team Alpine Racing. Beyond sports, Mahomes is expanding into the hospitality space through Throne Sport Coffee, his ready-to-drink cold brew brand, and a Kansas City steakhouse called 1587 Prime, which he co-owns with teammate Travis Kelce.
