Famed comedian, actress and writer Lily Tomlin was born Mary Jean Tomlin on September 1, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, to parents Guy and Lillie Mae Tomlin. The Tomlins had relocated to Michigan from Kentucky just prior to their daughter's birth. The future comedy star has one sibling, a younger brother named Richard.
Over the years, Lily Tomlin has made people laugh with her humorous characters, from child Edith Ann to snarky operator Ernestine. Some of these wacky characters were showcased on the hit comedy series Laugh-In, which ran from 1969 to 1973.
Tomlin's work on Laugh-In catapulted her to stardom. She went on to appear in dramatic and comedic films, including Nashville (1975), directed by Robert Altman, the working women's revenge comedy Nine to Five (1980) with Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda, and All of Me (1984) with Steve Martin.
Since that time, Tomlin has continued to mix the serious and the humorous, appearing on such shows as Frasier, Homicide: Life on the Street, Will & Grace and The West Wing. She has also done voiceover work for several projects, including the popular animated TV series The Simpsons and 2006's animated feature film The Ant Bully (in which Tomlin played the character Mommo). She reunited with director Robert Altman for his last film, A Prairie Home Companion (2006), and went on to appear in films such as The Walker (2007) with Woody Harrelson, in which she played Abigail Delorean; The Pink Panther 2 (2009), as Mrs. Berenger; and Admission (2013), as Susannah. Recent TV credits include Damages (2010), in which Tomlin played Marilyn Tobin, and Eastbound & Down (2012), in which the actress appeared as Tammy alongside Danny McBride, the show's comedic star.
Outside of her on-screen success, Lily Tomlin received a Tony Award for her one-woman Broadway show, In Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, in 1985. To the delight of audiences everywhere, she has gone on tour with this show several times. Tomlin also continues to host numerous comedy shows nationwide each year.
In August 2013, it was reported that Tomlin might finally marry her same-sex partner of 42 years, writer Jane Wagner (Wagner was the writer of Tomlin's one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe)—an announcement that came not long after the federal ruling in support of same-sex marriage in 2013, deeming the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and striking down Proposition 8.
