Born on December 16, 1485 in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, Catherine was the learned daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Catherine married the Prince of Wales, but upon his death would later wed Henry VIII. Catherine was held in favor until the king annulled their marriage in quest for a male heir, pursuing other unions. She was banished from court and from her only surviving child, Mary.
