Thomas Nast was a cartoonist, best known for his attack on the political machine of William M. Tweed in the 1870s. Talented from an early age, he began working for Harper's Weekly at the age of 18. His 1800s illustrations expressed his detest of slavery - so much so that Lincoln called him "our best recruiting sergeant." He penned the Republican Party's elephant and the Democratic Party's donkey.
