Martin Van Buren was born December 5, 1782 in Kinderhook, New York. He had a law practice before being elected to the U.S. Senate, then serving as Secretary of State and Vice President under Andrew Jackson. One of the founders of the Democratic Party, Martin Van Buren was elected President in 1836. An unpopular leader during a financial panic and various wars, he failed to win a second term.
