Joseph Conrad was born December 3, 1857, in Berdychiv, Ukraine. During his life he was admired for his rich prose and renderings of dangerous life at sea and in exotic places. But his initial reputation as a masterful teller of adventures masked his fascination with the individual when faced with his inner battles. He has been increasingly regarded as one of the greatest English novelists.
