Born in 1878, Jack Johnson, nicknamed "Galveston Giant," was the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion. He won the title by knocking out Tommy Burns, and lost it in 1915 to Jess Willard. Discrimination plagued Johnson's career until his fight with Burns. He was arrested for taking his white wife across state lines before being wed. After fighting, he appeared in vaudeville.
