Profile

Born in 1881, Branch Rickey devised the farm system of training baseball players while with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1919. He later became president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and in 1945 he broke a longstanding race barrier by signing Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the major leagues, who was brought up to play as an infielder for Brooklyn in 1947.
