Berry Gordy Jr., born in 1929 in Detroit, Michigan, founded Motown Records, the most successful black owned music company in the history of the United States. Motown Records recorded some of the most successful songs and groups in R&B and beyond, like Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder. Gordy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
