After they returned to Missouri on September 23, 1806 from their two year journey, Lewis and Clark were national heroes. President Jefferson appointed Lewis as Governor of the Louisiana territories, but Lewis fell into a deep depression as his personal and professional life began to fall apart. Lewis set out for Washington to clear his name, but he would never make it for he committed suicide on his way there. Clark, on the other hand, went on to lead a prosperous and influential life.
