Willem Dafoe made his film debut with a small part in Heaven's Gate (1980) and went on to the Oscar-nominated role of Sergeant Elias in Platoon (1986) and the controversial title role in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). He also appeared in Born on the Fourth of July (1989), Tom and Viv (1994), The English Patient (1996) and Spider-Man (2002). Dafoe lent his voice to the heroic Gill in 2003’s Finding Nemo, and joined the cast of The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), before earning awards buzz for The Florida Project (2017).

Willem Dafoe was born on July 22, 1955, in Appleton, Wisconsin. He joined an avant garde theatre group and toured extensively with them for two years in the U.S. and Europe, before becoming a founding member of the Wooster Group.

Dafoe starred as Green Goblin in the big-budget hit Spider-Man in 2002, and reprised the role with cameos in the next two installments of the trilogy. Additionally, he appeared in such films as Animal Factory (2003) and Manderlay (2005), and supplied his distinctive voice for the heroic Gill in Finding Nemo (2003) and Finding Dory (2016).

Later films included The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) and The Florida Project (2017), for which he earned serious buzz heading into the awards season. In December 2017, he was featured in a Variety article that called him a "clear frontrunner" for an Oscar. Dafoe later scored nominations from both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards for the acclaimed role.
