The first English child born in America, Virginia Dare’s parents were among the 120 settlers who landed at Roanoke Island, Virginia (present-day North Carolina), in 1587. Her grandfather was the colony's governor; he left to collect supplies in England 9 days after her birth. A relief expedition that reached the colony in 1590 found only the word croatoan carved on a post; the infant had vanished along with all the others. It became known as "The Lost Colony."
