Thomas Pendergast was born on July 22, 1872, in St. Joseph, Missouri, and went on to become the head of Kansas City’s Democratic political machine in the mid-1910s. He was a force in state and municipal politics for more than two decades and involved in various criminal activities, ultimately being imprisoned for tax evasion in 1939. Pendergast died on January 26, 1945.
