The Man in the Iron Mask, otherwise known as "Eustache Dauger" and "Marchioly," wore a black velvet mask to hide his true identity. He was arrested in 1681, and was held as a political prisoner under the custody of prison guard Bénigne d'Auvergne de Saint-Mars at the Fortress of Pignerol before he was transferred to the Bastille. After decades of imprisonment, he died in France circa 1703.
