S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike was born on January 8, 1899 Colombo, Ceylon. He studied at the University of Oxford and returned to Ceylon to enter politics in 1931. Running under the People's United Front, Bandaranaike was elected prime minister in 1956, but was assassinated by a Buddhist monk in 1959. Bandaranaike's widow became prime minister following her husband's death.
