Sukarno Biography

President (non-U.S.) (1901–1970)
Sukarno is best known as the first president of the Republic of Indonesia.


Indonesian world leader Sukarno was born on June 6, 1901, in Surabaja, Java, Dutch East Indies. Like many Javanese people, he went by one name. In 1927, he became the leader of the Indonesian Independence Movement Party and fought for the country’s independence from the Netherlands. In 1945, Sukarno became the first president of the new Republic of Indonesia, a position he held for almost 21 years. Sukarno died on June 21, 1970.
