Robert Ingersoll was an American politician and orator best known as "the great agnostic" who popularized criticism of the Bible and scientific rationalism. Ingersoll was a lawyer before he served in the American Civil War, turning to politics in 1867 as Illinois attorney general. He was nationally known as a witty lecturer on exposing the orthodox superstitions of the time.
