Robert Of Anjou, known as Robert the Wise, ruled as King of Naples for 34 years. He is best known as "the peace-maker of Italy" for the significant changes he brought during his rule. He is remembered by Petrarch and Boccaccio as a patron of the arts. At his death in 1343, he was succeeded by his 16-year-old granddaughter Joanna, who was already betrothed to her cousin, Andrew of Hungary.
