Ramsay MacDonald Biography

Prime Minister (1866–1937)
Ramsay MacDonald was the first Labour Party prime minister of Great Britain, in Labour governments and the national coalition government.


In 1894 Ramsay MacDonald joined the newly founded Independent Labour Party, and the next year he was defeated. In 1900 he became the first secretary of the Labour Representation Committee. In 1906 he won election to the Commons. Five years later he became parliamentary leader of the party. In 1922, he was chosen to lead the Labour opposition. In 1924, he became prime minister.
