Rómulo Gallegos spent most of his life focusing on being one of the leading novelists of Latin American literature. His titles include Doña Bárbara (1929), Canaima (1935) and Pobre negro (1937). In 1936 Gallegos began a political career that eventually made him Venezuela's first cleanly elected president in 1948. He was overthrown by a military coup nine months into his service.
