Despite opposition to his appointment, Stephen V was pope from 885 to 891 during a time of tumult for Italy.


Believed to be born in Rome with date of birth unknown, Stephen V was elected pope in 885 despite the opposition of Charles III. Stephen, who had a personal fortune that he used to ease hunger, also became involved in religious divisions and political power struggles, backing Basil I the Macedonian and crowning Duke Guy of Spoleto as Holy Roman Emperor. He died on September 14, 891.
