Olivier Messiaen Biography

Songwriter (1908–1992)
French organist Olivier Messiaen created works inspired by Roman Catholic theology. Even when captured in World War II, he continued to compose.


Olivier Messiaen was born on December 10, 1908, in Avignon, France. He entered the Paris Conservatory at 11 where he studied with masters like Marcel Dupré. In 1931, he became the organist at the Church of the Sainte-Trinité in Paris. He was taken prisoner while serving in World War II, but continued to compose. Once released, he returned to Sainte-Trinité. He died on April 27, 1992.
