Jewish leader Nehemiah (c. 5th century BC) oversaw the rebuilding of Jerusalem and strengthened the religious practices of his people.


The story of Nehemiah (born fifth century BC) is recorded in the Bible's Book of Nehemiah. Hearing that the Jews were returning to Jerusalem after a time of banishment, Nehemiah left his post as cup bearer to a king in order to rebuild the great city. Discovering that some of the returning Jews had relaxed their religious practices, he instituted reforms that strengthened their future observance.
