The story of Nehemiah (born fifth century BC) is recorded in the Bible's Book of Nehemiah. Hearing that the Jews were returning to Jerusalem after a time of banishment, Nehemiah left his post as cup bearer to a king in order to rebuild the great city. Discovering that some of the returning Jews had relaxed their religious practices, he instituted reforms that strengthened their future observance.
