Born c.1584, Myles Standish may have encountered the English religious exiles known as the Pilgrims when he was fighting in the Netherlands as a young man. He sailed to New England with them on the Mayflower in 1620, and served as military leader for the Plymouth colony. In that post, he protected the Pilgrims, fought hostile native tribes and ousted colonists who were considered "unpuritanical."
