Mithridates VI--known as "the Great"--was born in 134 BC in the city of Sinop (located in modern-day Turkey). He was king of Pontus in northern Anatolia (120–63 ). Under his leadership, Pontus expanded to absorb several of its small neighbours and, briefly, contested Rome's hegemony during the Mithridatic Wars. He died in 63 BC.
