Michael Ondaatje was born on September 12, 1943, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and immigrated to Montreal, Canada, when he was 19. He published well-regarded poetry collections, including The Collected Works of Billy the Kid and several critically-lauded novels, including The English Patient, which was named co-winner of the Booker Prize in 1992 and later adapted into an Academy-Award-winning film. In 2018, The English Patient was voted the best of the Booker Prize winners to mark the 50-year anniversary of the award.
