Maximilian Biography

Emperor, Military Leader (1832–1867)
Maximilian was the Archduke of Austria and the Emperor of Mexico from 1863-1867. He was executed in 1867 by President Benito Juárez's victorious forces.


Maximilian was born on July 6, 1832 in Vienna. Archduke of Austria, Maximilian was made emperor of Mexico in 1863. Propped up by conservative Mexicans and the French emperor Napoleon III, Maximilian was supported by the French Army until the US demanded they withdraw. Benito Juárez then defeated Maximilian's forces and had the emperor executed in 1867.
