Maurice Béjart Biography

Choreographer (1927–2007)
Dancer and choreographer Maurice Béjart founded Switzerland's Béjart Ballet Lausanne, known for his 2000 version of The Nutcracker.


Maurice Béjart toured with various ballet companies before founding his own in 1954. Headquartered in Brussels, his company took the name Ballet of the Twentieth Century. In 1961, Béjart began working in opera, staging Tales of Hoffmann and Berlioz's Damnation of Faust, among others. In 1987 his company became Béjart Ballet Lausanne, noted for his 2000 version of The Nutcracker.
