Manuel Álvarez Bravo was a photographer who was part of the artistic renaissance that occurred after the Mexican Revolution. Although he was influenced by international developments, his art remained profoundly Mexican. His interest in Mexican religious rituals introduced an element of the fantastic to his work, giving his images the kind of hidden symbolism common in Surrealism.
