Mahmoud Abbas was born on March 26, 1935, in Zefat, Palestine (now Israel). In 1980, he became head of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s international and national relations department. His leadership of peace talks between Israel and Palestine led to the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords. He was elected president of the Palestinian Authority in 2005, and became the unofficial president of the State of Palestine in 2008.
