Luis Muñoz Marín Biography

Governor (1898–1980)
Luis Muñoz Marín was Puerto Rico's first governor, serving four terms.


Educated in the United States, where he studied law and wrote two books, Luis Muñoz Marín returned to Puerto Rico in 1926, entered local politics in 1932 and was elected its first governor in 1948. During his governorship, Marin achieved a lifelong goal in changing Puerto Rico's status to that of a commonwealth, and in December 1963, he received the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom. He died in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1980.
