Kathleen Battle Biography

American opera singer Kathleen Battle is widely considered to be among the finest coloratura sopranos of her time. She has won five Grammy Awards.


Kathleen Battle was born August 13, 1948 in Portsmouth, Ohio. She debuted at the 1972 Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. By 1976 she was singing in major American opera houses. In 1977 she sang at the Metropolitan Opera. She recorded a variety of music and won five Grammy Awards from 1986 to 1993. In 1994 the Metropolitan Opera dismissed Battle for what it termed “unprofessional actions.”
