Katherine McPhee was born in 1984 in California. An aspiring singer, she found herself in the national spotlight in 2006 when she became runner-up to Taylor Hicks on TV's American Idol. She then released her debut album which climbed to #2 on the Billboard charts. McPhee continues to make music but also stepped into acting in 2007, appearing in a number of shows before landing a prime role on NBC’s Smash in 2012. Although the series was cancelled after one season, McPhee has remained in demand and in 2014, she landed a starring role on CBS’ hit drama, Scorpion.

Katharine McPhee was born on March 25, 1984 in Los Angeles. After attending the Boston Conservatory for three semesters, McPhee returned to Los Angeles to embark on her acting career. However, her rise to fame began in 2006 when she became runner up to Taylor Hicks on the fifth season of American Idol. From there she released her self-titled debut album, which shot to no. 2 on the Billboard 200, and included hits like "Over It." She has continued to release albums, her latest being Hysteria in 2015, but her chart-topping success has never surpassed her first release.
However, McPhee's acting career has been in high demand. In 2012, she nabbed a lead role as Karen Cartwright in the highly anticipated NBC series Smash. After the series was cancelled after one season, McPhee appeared in a couple of television movies. In 2014, she landed the starring role of Paige Dineen in CBS' hit series Scorpion.
McPhee married Nick Cokas in 2008 and filed for divorce in 2014, months after being photographed kissing married Smash director Michael Morris. McPhee and Cokas finalized their divorce two years later. Around the time McPhee separated from Cokas, she began dating her Scorpion co-star Elyes Gabel, but their relationship ended in June 2016.
McPhee has been open about her past struggles with bulimia and her continued issues with having a healthy body image.
