American actor, director and screenwriter Justin Paul Theroux was born on August 10, 1971 in Washington, D.C., to father Eugene Theroux, an attorney, and mother Phyllis (Grissim) Theroux, a writer. Theroux landed his first film role in I Shot Andy Warhol, and went on to perform in Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, with Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino; Zoolander, with Ben Stiller and Will Ferrell; and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, alongside Drew BarrymoreCameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu. In recent years, Theroux has performed on the TV series Strangers with Candy, starring Amy Sedaris; in the 2011 film Your Highness, starring Natalie Portman and James Franco; and in the 2012 film Wanderlust, starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd. More recently, he starred in HBO's The Leftovers.

Theroux began acting in the mid-1990s; he landed his first film role in I Shot Andy Warhol, starring Lili Taylor and Jill Hennessy. Since then, he's had parts in major Broadway productions, TV series and films, and has become best known for his comedic roles. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he performed in such films as Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, with Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino; Zoolander, with Ben Stiller and Will Ferrell; and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, alongside Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu. 

Around the same time, Theroux landed parts in several serious films, including 2000's American Psycho, a dark, psychological thriller starring Christian Bale. He also had parts in the films Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire, both directed by David Lynch. Between 2003 and 2004, he starred in HBO's Six Feet Under.

In 2005 Theroux performed on the film adaptation of Strangers with Candy, starring Amy Sedaris; in the 2008 comedy film Tropic Thunder, which he co-wrote; in the 2011 film Your Highness, starring Natalie Portman and James Franco; and in the 2012 film Wanderlust, starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd. In 2012 he worked as a screenwriter on the 1980s musical Rock of AgesTheroux also returned to television, appearing in Parks and Recreation in 2010 and starring as Kevin Garvey in the cult-favorite The Leftovers, which premiered on HBO in 2014.

In 2016 he reprised his Evil DJ role in Zoolander 2, which he co-wrote, and also starred as a philandering husband in Girl on a Train (2016). The following year he made a cameo appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) as The Master Codebreaker.

In 2018 Theroux starred as a CIA Agent in the comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me, opposite Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon.

The actor has also recently done voiceover work, playing Lord Garmadon in The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017) and the upcoming sci-fi Transformers animation Bumblebee as Decepticon Dropkick.

Personal Life

Theroux began dating stylist Heidi Bivens in the late 1990s, and the couple dated for nearly 14 years before splitting in 2011. In August 2012, Theroux announced his engagement to actress Jennifer Aniston, whom he first met on the set of Tropic Thunder (2008). In August 2015, the A-list couple married in a secret, private ceremony at their home in Bel Air but separated two years later.
