Jonathan Franzen is an American novelist and essayist whose sprawling, multilayered novels about contemporary America elicited critical acclaim.


Jonathan Franzen was born August 17, 1959 in Western Springs, Illinois. His debut novel was The Twenty-seventh City. His second novel was Strong Motion. He worked for eight years on his next novel, The Corrections. He contributed a series of essays to The New Yorker magazine that were later compiled into his fourth book, How to Be Alone. He published a memoir, The Discomfort Zone, in 2006.
