John Harvard Biography

Philanthropist, Religious Figure (c. 1607–1638)
John Harvard was a New England colonist whose bequest permitted the firm establishment of Harvard College.


John Harvard was born November 26, 1607, in London, England. He married in 1636 and sailed for New England the following year. In 1637, he became a freeman of Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay Colony, where he served as assistant pastor. When he died of tuberculosis he directed that half his money be given to a school recently created in neighboring New Towne, soon to be renamed Cambridge.
