John Harvard was born November 26, 1607, in London, England. He married in 1636 and sailed for New England the following year. In 1637, he became a freeman of Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay Colony, where he served as assistant pastor. When he died of tuberculosis he directed that half his money be given to a school recently created in neighboring New Towne, soon to be renamed Cambridge.
