John Carroll Biography

Archbishop (1736–1815)
John Carroll was the first Roman Catholic bishop in the United States and the first archbishop of Baltimore. He established the U.S. Roman Catholic church.


John Carroll was born January 8, 1736, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He was sent abroad for his education, first to France and then to Belgium, where he was ordained. Carroll returned to Baltimore in the spring of 1774. He became the first U.S. Roman Catholic and the first archbishop of Baltimore. Under his leadership, the Roman Catholic church was established in the United States.
