Joey McIntyre, the youngest member of the boy band New Kids on the Block, has also acted on Broadway, TV and film, and competed on Dancing with the Stars.

Joey McIntyre was born on December 31, 1972, in Needham, Massachusetts. He's the youngest member of New Kids on the Block, a boy band that produced numerous hits, especially in the late 1980s and early 1990s. McIntyre, a married dad of three, has also enjoyed singing solo and acting, as well as making NKOTB reunion albums.

Early Years

Joseph Mulrey McIntyre was named after St. Joseph by his dad, Thomas, a bricklayers' union official, and mom, Katherine, a community-theater actress. The McIntyres welcomed their ninth child on December 31, 1972, in Needham, Massachusetts. With a strong religious upbringing, McIntyre attended parochial school, served as an altar boy and sang in the church choir. With an innate vocal talent, he was already performing in the Neighborhood Children's Theater of Boston by age 6.

New Kids on the Block

Before reaching adolescence, McIntyre was tapped to be a part of New Kids on the Block by music producer Maurice Starr, the man behind New Edition. The other members of the boy band, Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight and Danny Wood, were recruited by their friend Donnie Wahlberg. McIntyre was brought in specifically to replace Wahlberg's buddy, Jamie Kelly, whose parents forced him to bail out. The youngest member of NKOTB had to prove himself to his bandmates. Eventually they meshed and found success with their second album, Hangin' Tough, in 1988, which included the hits "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" and "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)." They went on to sell 80 million records.

Singing Solo and Acting

In 1994, NKOTB disbanded. McIntyre went into acting, starring in The Fantasticks, a 1995 film based on the musical. Four years later, he scored a recording contract and released his album Stay the Same, which he co-produced along with his former bandmates Wahlberg and Wood. It sold over a million copies. More solo projects followed, as did acting jobs, including roles on TV's Boston Public and in Broadway's Wicked. He also competed on Season 1 of Dancing with the Stars in 2006, finishing third.

NKOTB Reunion

Today, McIntyre parents his three kids with wife Barrett Williams. He also works to raise awareness for children with hearing issues; one of his sons is hearing-impaired. Despite juggling so much, including his 2013 summer movie Heat—also starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy—McIntyre performed with rest of NKOTB on the 2013 Package Tour to support their new album, 10. The tour also featured 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men.
