Singer Joe Jonas rose to fame as a member of the boy band the Jonas Brothers, and has gone on to appear in Disney Channel original movies and guest-star on television.

Who Is Joe Jonas?

Joe Jonas was born on August 15, 1989, in Casa Grande, Arizona, and grew up in Wyckoff, New Jersey. He began his career at age 12 when he was cast in Baz Luhrmann's production of La Bohème on Broadway. Jonas later signed a recording contract with two of his brothers and formed the hit boy band the Jonas Brothers. The siblings found great success while working with the Disney Company and became teen idols.

Early Life

Joe Jonas was born Joseph Adam Jonas in Casa Grande, Arizona, on August 15, 1989, to parents Denise, a former sign-language teacher, and Paul Kevin Sr., a former Christian minister and musician. Jonas was raised in Wyckoff, New Jersey, and is the second of four brothers. Music was a large part of Jonas's family and upbringing. His brother Nick even signed a recording contract with Columbia Records as a young boy.

Jonas noticed how much fun his brother was having as a musician, and at age 12 auditioned for and was cast in Baz Luhrmann's Broadway production of Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohème. He soon began to collaborate with Nick and older brother Kevin, to great success. The brothers' efforts were noticed by Columbia Records, and subsequently Joe and Kevin were optioned into Nick's contract. The three siblings then created the boy band the Jonas Brothers.

Commercial Success

The Jonas Brothers released one album with Columbia but were later dropped by the label due to poor record sales. In early 2007 Disney's Hollywood Records picked up the trio, and by the summer's end their songs were heard all over Radio Disney and their videos could be seen on the Disney Channel.

The boys' success with Disney continued to climb when they guest-starred on Miley Cyrus's Disney show, Hannah Montana, earning the program its highest ratings to date. Subsequently they were asked to open for Cyrus's 2007 tour, "Best of Both Worlds."

The Jonas Brothers' self-titled album, released that same year, reached the Top 5 on the Billboard charts and went double platinum. The album's single, "S.O.S.," soared to No. 1 on iTunes.

Their follow-up album, "A Little Bit Longer," marked an industry first. Jonas and his brothers became the first act ever to have three albums—the former two and Camp Rock, the Disney original movie soundtrack—in the Billboard Top 10 at once. The group released their third album with Hollywood Records, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, in 2009.

Jonas has further expanded his career to the small screen, appearing in Disney Channel original movies, guest-starring on Hot in Cleveland with Betty White and lending his voice to the animated reality series Total Drama.

In October 2013, the Jonas Brothers made headlines when they announced the cancellation of their fall tour. Later in the month, the group made another announcement, this time even more devastating to fans: the brothers had decided to part ways musically.

After the split, Jonas took to working on other creative projects. He formed a new band with friends and fellow musicians, guitarist JinJoo Lee, drummer Jack Lawless and bassist Cole Whittle. DNCE released their first single, "Cake by the Ocean," in 2015.

In January 2018, former Jonas backing musician Ryan Liestman posted a photo on Instagram that featured the brothers and the caption, "Family reunion." The post prompted speculation that a reunion was in the works, though there was no immediate confirmation to that rumor.

Personal Life

Jonas has dated a number of high-profile celebrities, including singer Taylor Swift, actress Camilla Belle, singer Demi Lovato, and model Gigi Hadid.
