Hugh Lofting Biography

Hugh Lofting, a British writer who resided in the U.S., was responsible for the highly successful Doctor Dolittle book series.


Born on January 14, 1886, in Berkshire, England, Hugh Lofting studied engineering and worked internationally before serving in WWI, writing letters to his children about a caring doctor character who talks with animals. This inspired his Doctor Dolittle series, which was highly successful through the 1920s and eventually adapted to film. An ardent believer in peace, Lofting died on September 26, 1947.
