Hugh Capet was born in 938 in Paris, France, the son of Hugh the Great. Capet received great amounts of land upon his father’s death and was involved in political affairs before being elected king in 987 and hence starting the Capetian Dynasty of rulers. While still alive, Capet crowned his son to succeed as king, a practice continued by later heirs. Capet died on October 24, 996, in Paris, France.
