President (non-U.S.) (1942–)
Communist party leader Hu Jintao became vice president of China in 1998 and president in 2003. His administration has focused on social and economic reform.


Hu Jintao was born on December 21, 1942, in Jiangyan, China. In 1985, he was made Chinese Communist Party secretary for Guizhou Province. In 1987, he became a member of the CCP Central Committee and was appointed provincial party secretary a year later. In 1992, he was named a member of the Secreteriat. Five years later he was elected vice president of China. In 2003, he was elected president.
